The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is an international network of universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations involved in education and science in the North. UArctic, following the motto "Strong North-by common efforts", supports residents of the circumpolar North, provides them with unique educational and research opportunities on the platform of a powerful partner network.

The main values that the University relies on remain the following: circumpolarity, inclusivity and reciprocity.

From the history of UArctic:

UArctic University in Rovaniemi, Finland, started on June 12, 2001. The first Director of UArctic, and later President, was Norwegian Lars Kullerud.

In 2002, the University of the Arctic received observer status in the Arctic Council.

In 2011, IASC, IASSA and the University of the Arctic signed an agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in the Arctic.

In 2017, the University of the Arctic becomes a partner of UNESCO.

UArctic University today

The strategic plan of The University of the Arctic (the full text is available on the official website) sets out priority areas for 2020:

  • Access to education for Northern students
  • Science and research in the North
  • Increasing knowledge of the North
  • Close-knit partner network

UArctic publishes its own magazine. Shared Voices is an annual magazine covering the activities of The University of the Arctic, as well as current issues of the circumpolar world. For example, the 2020 issue focuses on the activities of members of the University of the Arctic to combat climate change, and issues of the journal published since 2007 can also be found in the electronic version on the website.

The University includes more than 170 educational institutions and organizations, available in 24 time zones, from the Arctic "eight" – Canada, Finland, Denmark (and Greenland), Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States and several other countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, UK, etc.).

Russia is represented UArctic in 22 separate institutions of higher education.

There are two administrative offices of The University of the Arctic in Russia

• Research office (Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Arkhangelsk )

• Russian-language information support center (North-Eastern Federal University, Yakutsk)

The current version of the UArctic University website contains a catalog of educational programs and courses, a lot of thematic networks and relevant research.

In conclusion, I would like to note that cooperation of international organizations, Russian and foreign universities in the framework of projects and programs UArctic gives a chance to the students not only get full and quality knowledge training programs, to learn theoretical approaches to solving issues, but also to participate in studies of large international projects in policy development that brings practical benefits in the form of updating the content of educational programs and improving the quality and quantity of specialized personnel for the Arctic.
