China begins the ninth Arctic expedition

The participants of the ninth Chinese Arctic scientific expedition on Friday on Board the research vessel "Xuelong" will go from Shanghai to the North pole. This became known at a press conference of the Chinese center for polar research.


According to Deputy head of the Office for polar expeditions Xia Limin, according to the plan, "Xuelong" during the expedition will overcome more than 12.3 thousand nautical miles and will return to the port of Shanghai in the third decade of September.

During the expedition, the participants will conduct a survey in the Bering sea, the Chukotka sea, the Arctic ocean and other areas important for the Chinese Arctic expedition, as well as study the features of hydrological processes, meteorological conditions, marine Geology, Geophysics, marine organisms and ecology, marine chemistry and other environmental factors.

In addition, scientists will study the environment and fish resources, as well as new environmental pollutants in the polar latitudes; study the changes in the environment at the North pole and conduct a survey of the Arctic Central fairway taking into account the situation with glaciers.
