In Russia a series of the exhibitions devoted to the Russian North started. The intermuseum project initiated by the Norilsk Nickel company received the name "Development of the North: one thousand years of success". Lenta.ru learned what exhibits will expose in the museums and as the northern culture unites territories from Murmansk to Taimyr.

Museum kaleidoscope

The largest museums of the country participate in the project. Three years they will tell about history of the Russian way to the north — from Murmansk to Norilsk, from the Kola Peninsula to Taimyr.

"This project is important for various reasons — on geopolitical, historical, economic, on industrial and international — the curator, the doctor of historical sciences Yulia Kantor explains it. — Just the Arctic forum in Arkhangelsk came to the end, there are also RGO programs connected with history of development of the North, but yet there is no project uniting the most different regions through culture and through display of this history by means of museum pieces".

Expositions will allow to consider a thousand-year Russian way to the north by means of artifacts, documents, literary works and multimedia compositions, and also to enter history of the last decades of the 20th century in wider context. According to organizers, step by step northern plots will develop different sides, as in a kaleidoscope.

"Essentially that the story will go not linearly - chronological, and subject: we want to present the most different aspects of the thousand-year northern history kept in the Russian museums — the Cantor says. — A series will consist of nine exhibitions presenting the anthology of development of the North as a mosaic in a uniform cloth which is interesting for considering also to professionals, and just that who isn't indifferent to Fatherland history".

"The project will allow all of us to write together a story of the last decades, history of the 20th century in wider context — the senior vice-president of the Norilsk Nickel company Larisa Zelkova notes. — Russia traditionally developed the northern territories, developing trade and the industry. Norilsk — success embodiment on this way, the modern industrial capital of northern territories of Russia — of course, not without reason will become a point of end of the project. It is extremely important and interesting to us to look what our predecessors throughout several centuries of the Russian history dreamed and thought of".

Curators emphasize that each of nine expositions will be followed by release of the illustrated popular scientific edition, and as a result there will be a peculiar northern encyclopedia. Following the results of three years' work there will be a multivolume "History of development of the North".

"When the project was considered, in general it was clear that three years to talk about the North to do remarkable photo exhibitions from a multimedia component and to show blocks of these exhibitions on the websites of the museums — it is remarkable, but the most eternal is a paper. The most important for the story with visual maintenance is a book" — Yulia Kantor notes.

According to Zelkova, problems of inhabitants of the North almost don't change over the years. "Three main difficulties which the person meets there were familiar also to our ancestors — she says. — First of all it is unique and not always friendly to the person climate, the nature which isn't too welcoming appearance of people in the undivided possession. Remoteness from infrastructure: and three hundred years ago, and five hundred people, going to expeditions, counted only on themselves. And today on the card of our big Russian North, the Arctic territories, there are many such places where it is possible to reach only by plane and if for any reason the plane doesn't fly, then it is necessary to reach under the own steam. Norilsk fully treats such places. At last, the call urgent for all generations of the people mastering the North is an isolation in cultural and social sense when the person living in small — or not really — the northern city, is torn off from those processes which go in the capital, big cities, in the main territory of the country, and can not always use fruits of cultural development, usual in other parts of Russia".

North faces

Within the project the museums will organize exhibitions, connected with history of the Russian way to the north. The first stage will take place in Veliky Novgorod, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The cycle opens on April 9 the Ways to the North exhibition in the Novgorod state joint memorial estate. "Our museum stores a reference archaeological collection — the CEO of memorial estate Natalya Grigorieva explains. — First of all it letters from distant centuries — the birchbark manuscripts telling about how enterprising Novgorodians prepared for campaigns to novel places to establish there the ancestral lands".

Also household items will be presented at an exhibition: tips of arrows, products from a morzhovy canine and a tree. A part of an exposition is devoted to transport — among exhibits there are devices for movement on snow and ice, details of courts and sledge, fragments of skis and ledokhodny thorns.

"All this in detail tells about such difficult business as development of the North, expansion of geographical space. At that time Novgorod was the socio-political and cultural capital of Russia, the largest participant of the Hanseatic union. It is confirmed by serious artifacts. Opening of this project in Novgorod is very logical, precisely and historically truly" — the director of the museum adds.

Polar exhibit

In October in showroom of the Russian state library in Moscow at the Reality and Myths exhibition will submit maps of the Russian North from the 16th century and up to now.

"It will be extremely fascinating and real story of cartography. The main exhibit — the drawing book of Siberia. It is the big hand-written atlas which is stored in the Russian state library. It was made for Peter I. There the rivers flow not to the north as we have got used rather the North is not above, and below. We will show on this example as heaven and earth in Petrovsky time as there was an image of the world, habitual for us, was moved and as far as it was unlike early cartography" — the deputy director of the Russian state library Natalya Samoylenko has told.

Will present at an exhibition also the maps and atlases connected with seafarers including the small atlas of Wrangel with the first image of the polar lights. "Our exhibition will acquaint with cards navigation, educational which give ideas of various provinces — Samoylenko has added. — Visitors will be able to see cards as art, to understand how important and considerable was always the North for all who were engaged in his development. We understand the North very widely: from the western borders and to Alaska"

And the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg will show "Images of the North". The exhibition in the Peter and Paul Fortress will open on December 5 within the St. Petersburg cultural forum. Her main subject "Russia as Empire of the North". The engravings executed as residents, and those who in him never were will be presented at an exhibition. A lot of attention is planned to be paid to northern brands (for example, a candy store "North") and souvenir products with polar bears.

"We will tell about the Soviet North, about construction of ice breakers. How cinema, painting, mass souvenir products positioned the northern cities to the USSR, development of the Arctic. Our exhibition will open within the St. Petersburg cultural forum. And as it will be on New Year's Eve, we think to make the children's program that in days of New Year's vacation it was interesting to little visitors in our museum" — the scientific secretary of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg Irina Karpenko has told.

Next year the museum relay will be picked up by Omsk, Perm Krai and the Leningrad region. The final will take place in Norilsk when in the city century of opening of the Norilsk field is noted.
