Specialists of the Bauman Moscow state technical University have developed a technology for changing the structure of ice, thanks to which it can be used in the construction of runways, as well as for storage sites on the mainland territories of the Arctic. The project is called "Platform".
"This implies the creation of pre-built ice airfields by modifying the ice surface with special chemical reagents that allow air transport vehicles to land on the prepared ice strip. We are working with the defense Ministry in this direction," Yevgeny Storozhuk said, adding that in the future, even heavy military transport aircraft, such as the Il-76, will be able to land at such airfields. He also noted that the technology is currently being developed and, according to experts, this stage will last about a year.
The strength of the ice strip and the presence of cracks on it will be checked by fiber-optic sensors laid in its thickness. In the event of a thaw, the condition of the ice area will be maintained by freezing or adding reagents. At the same time, it is assumed that controllers of such airfields will be able to work remotely.
