Scientists of the Arctic center will repeat the route of the great Northern expedition of the XVIII century

Participants of the historical and local lore expedition of the Arctic center on Friday went on the way of Russian polar pioneers Vasily Pronchishchev, Khariton Laptev, who participated in the great Northern expedition of the middle of the XVIII century. The length of the route along the Northern Land will be about 1.5 thousand km, the President of the center Vladimir Chukov told TASS.

The great Northern expedition was organized on the initiative of Emperor Peter I in 1725, the actual start of its preparation was given by decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna in 1731. The objective of the expedition was mapping the coast of the state.

"The expedition route starts from the Lena river Delta near the village of Tiksi. This is a circular route with access to the lower reaches of the river, with a visit to the village of Ust-Olenek, where the grave of the Russian Arctic Explorer Pronchishchev, then return to Tiksi. One of our tasks is to follow the path of groups of Russian polar pioneers Vasily Pronchishchev, Khariton Laptev, who participated in the great Northern expedition of 1733-1742," Chukov said.

According to him, the expedition involved 18 people, including employees of the Tula state University, who were engaged in the preparation of all-terrain vehicles "Toros-M" to ensure their work in the Arctic. "We will move on two all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles there are two teams of sled dogs, skiing. It all depends on the conditions for movement on a particular section of the road", - said the President of the center.

The total length of the route will be about 1.5 thousand km, the expedition is planned to be completed on April 26. Chukov said that the preparation began in December 2018, initially considered three routes - on the way of the expedition Ushakov and Urvantsev in 1930, on the island of Bolshevik, where in 1913 the expedition of Vilkitsky, as well as places associated with the great Northern expedition.

Expedition center "Arctic" was established in 1992 on the basis of scientific and sports expedition, engaged in the preparation and conduct of travel. The founders are the Moscow center of the Russian geographical society (RGO) and the Association of Russian polar explorers. The center cooperates with EMERCOM of Russia, Institute of Oceanology of RAS, polar research Foundation and other organizations.
