PAO NOVATEK delivered the first shipments of liquefied natural gas from the Yamal LNG project to China via the Northern sea route.

The ceremony of unloading LNG tankers of ice class Arc7 "Vladimir Rusanov" and "Edward toll" was held today in the port of Jiangsu Zhudun in the presence of Russian energy Minister Alexander Novak and head of the Chinese energy Department Nur Bekri.

The journey time from the port of Sabetta to the destination has nearly halved and amounted to 19 days. Deliveries on the traditional route through the Suez canal and the Strait of Malacus took 35 days.

Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of NOVATEK»:

This flight opens a new era in the supply of Russian LNG to the growing markets of the Asia-Pacific countries. The use of the Northern sea route allows to reduce the delivery time and transport costs, which is key for the development of our fields in Yamal and Gydan. The extensive high-quality natural gas reserves combined with low capital and operating costs make NOVATEK's LNG projects one of the most competitive in the world. The development of the Northern sea route also contributes to the development of the Russian North and is important for the economy of our country.

NOVATEK has been supplying liquid hydrocarbons with large-capacity tankers to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region via the Northern sea route since 2010. Now the Company has become a pioneer in the supply of Russian LNG along this route with the help of a unique tanker capable of transporting products of LNG projects of the Russian Arctic region without the help of an icebreaker.
