Victoria Island will be a part of national park "Russian Arctic"

Victoria Island can become a part of national park "Russian Arctic" in 2017, reports the Arctic.ru portal.

According to the acting director of the park Alexander Kirilov, now the administration prepares necessary documents.

"We hope that this year we will manage to arrange everything. We prepared reasons, it only should be corrected slightly. Further we start process of the state environmental assessment, after that we wait for the draft of the order of the Government of the Russian Federation. A way simple and clear, but very costly on time" — Kirilov told Arctic.ru.

The island, according to him, is of interest to scientists, it needs to be studied in addition. It is known that here bears constantly live, the big rookery of walruses, and also very big colony of a white seagull is located.

"It is the small island — a 500-meter plot of land for 99% covered with a glacier. It it is also unique: during Ice Age, the center of an ice board was on Victoria Island. Therefore it is interesting to studying of process of thawing of glaciers" — Kirilov added.
