Canada is concerned about the growth of Russia's military presence in the Arctic and, if necessary, ready for the military defense of its sovereignty in the region. This was stated by Foreign Minister John Baird in Canada in an interview with the Danish newspaper Berlingske during his visit to Copenhagen.

Canada "would prefer to solve the problem of security in the Arctic in a peaceful way, but if you need, ready to respond to Russian encroachment on the sovereignty of force," said Baird.

The diplomat noted that Canada "saw Russian provocations in the Arctic for several decades, and there is nothing new under the sun." The head of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the countries of the Arctic Council (which includes Russia) should solve all problems constructively.

Last week, Chief of the Russian Navy Victor Teals said about "studying the possibility of establishing naval bases" in the region of the Northern Sea Route. It is about creating a military infrastructure, where year-round could replenish their stocks of warships and civilian vessels. In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans to create a single system in the Arctic-based ships and submarines.

About Ottawa concern about the growth of Russian military activity in the Arctic during his recent visit to the Canadian Northwest Territories, said Prime Minister Stephen Harper. According to him, Russia's activity in the Arctic "is relatively less high than in Eastern Europe, but Canada will behave cautiously." Harper also said that Russian planes repeatedly violated the airspace of Canada.

Russia and Canada, as well as the United States, Norway and Denmark belong to the coastal states of the Arctic Ocean, which have territorial interests in the Arctic. In 2008, on the initiative of Denmark signed an agreement in which all five Arctic countries have expressed their commitment to a peaceful resolution of any conflicts that arise. Portion of which there is debate between Russia and Canada, is the underwater Lomonosov Ridge. Both Russia and Canada are considering Ridge as an extension of its continental shelf.
